What is a laryngectomy?

A brief explanation of what a laryngectomy is, why it may be recommended, and what it means for breathing and communication.

A laryngectomy is a surgical operation to remove the larynx (voice box). It may be recommended when laryngeal cancer cannot be treated with radiotherapy or partial surgery alone.

After a laryngectomy, you will breathe through a permanent opening in your neck called a stoma. Your voice will change, and you will work with a speech and language therapist to find the communication method that suits you best.
